Miroplana (?) spec.

Sluys, 1989a

Overview
Habitus: The preserved specimen was about 1.4 mm long and had a maximum breadth of about 0.70 mm. Anterior and posterior end are rounded. The dorsal surface shows two distinct transverse brands, one just behind the eyes and one directly posterior to the pharynx.

Alimentary System
The anterior ramus of the intestine extends anterior to the brain and the eyes. The posterior rami of the intestine come close together in the hind end of the body, and the photograph of the cleared specimen suggests that there are several commissures between the gut trunks. The pharynx is short and stubby; the mouth opening is at the hind end of the pharyngeal cavity.

Reproductive System
The immature animal lacks ovaries and copulatory apparatus; the vitellaria are welldeveloped, occupying the entire space between dorsal and ventral body surface and extending throughout the body length. In the hind end rudimentary testes are present in the ventral body region.

Eyes
The eyes are situated close to the mid-line of the body and are provided with a distinct lens.

Ecology
The specimen was collected from between sand and seaweed.

Distribution
South Georgia, mouth of Pot Bay.

Material Examined
S.M.N.H.: Swedish South Polar Expedition, station no. 28, South Georgia, 24.5.1902, transverse sections of the front end and sagittal sections of the hind end, each series on a separate slide.
